Roy and Billings return for BBL|07

07 November 2017

English duo Jason Roy and Sam Billings will return in magenta this coming summer as the Sixers add the two internationals to their roster ahead of the KFC Big Bash League.

Both players made a big impact on the Club last season, providing some fireworks on the field and fast becoming fan favourites off it.

Roy was a regular in the Sixers highlight reels, taking both an incredible catch and hitting a huge six in the season opener last summer against the Thunder at Spotless Stadium. His big hitting at the top of the order got the Sixers off to a solid start on more than one occasion and will be a great asset for the coming summer.

Billings brings experience and consistency to the middle order and pulled the Sixers out of a pickle more than once last season. He also provides a wicket keeping option for the Club should it be required.

Both players are expected to be called up to England’s short form squad later in the summer, but should be with the Sixers for the first half of the season.

Head Coach Greg Shipperd praised the players attitude from last season and welcomed their re-signing.

“We are thrilled to have Jason and Sam back with us in our quest to go one further and win BBL|07,” he said.

“Jason has the capacity to individually change the course of a match and we value his strike rate which was a stellar 161 last season, in combination with our two lefties at the top in Daniel Hughes and Nic Maddinson.

“As a batsman he possesses awesome natural power and has strokes on both sides of the wicket.

“More than that I was impressed by the impact he and Sam Billings had in the field. They lifted a very good fielding group into a world class unit.

“Sam is also a valuable signing for us. Importantly he had the capacity to bat anywhere from one to six which gives us comfort should we need or require adjustments to our order throughout the tournament. He can also cover with the gloves should that be necessary.

“Both the boys embraced the environment we were trying to create and they displayed a ready ability mix with their team mates and train at the levels required."

Sixers General Manager Dom Remond was also delighted to have both players back at the Club.

“It’s great to have Jason and Sam back for BBL|07,” he said.

“Jason is one of the most dynamic short form batters in the world and will be a key to our performance in the power play. He is a fantastic fit with the team and I know everyone if looking forward his return.

“Sam is a fabulous team player and showed last year he has a 360-degree game that is so important in T20. He is excellent in the middle order and we are looking forward to him showcasing all his tricks.”

The Sixers start their BBL|07 campaign on Tuesday 19 December against the Sydney Thunder at Spotless Stadium, followed by their first home game of the summer at the SCG against the Perth Scorchers on 23 December.

The BBL|07 squad is: Moises Henriques ©, Sean Abbott, Sam Billings, Jackson Bird, Johan Botha, Ben Dwarshuis, Daniel Hughes, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson, Peter Nevill, Stephen O’Keefe, Jason Roy, Jordan Silk, Mitchell Starc, Henry Thornton.
