Sixers BBL young gun Henry Thornton has been selected in the Prime Minister's XI to play Sri Lanka

Sixers Big Bash League youngster Henry Thornton has been selected in the Prime Minister's XI squad that will play Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 fixture this month.

The match will take place at Manuka Oval in Canberra on February 15 and comes less than a month after Thornton appeared for the Cricket Australia XI against Pakistan.

Thornton originally joined the Sixers as a Development Rookie, however, he was promoted to the full squad as a replacement player and eventually made his debut against the Brisbane Heat on January 3.

In that match at the Gabba won by the team in Magenta, Thornton opened the bowling and also took his first wicket when he trapped Jimmy Peirson LBW.

That was Thornton's only appearance for the Sixers in BBL|06 as they made their way all the way to the Big Final against the Perth Scorchers.

“I am delighted to congratulate each of the players selected to represent the PM’s XI for this year’s fixture against Sri Lanka. There is an enormous amount of new talent in this year’s squad, along with more established players, led by Adam Voges," said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

“This year also marks the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka. The PM’s XI cements and celebrates the deep bonds between our two countries.

“I look forward to hosting this year’s PM’s XI, welcoming Sri Lanka, and continuing this great tradition.”

The PM XI team will be coached by former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke.
