Sixers defeated by Stars

10 February 2019

The Sydney Sixers were handed a 94-run defeat by the Melbourne Stars in the final match of the Big Bash regular season at the MCG on Sunday.

Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques won the bat flip and sent the Stars into bat.

The home side started aggressively, with Marcus Stoinis taking 16 runs from Lloyd Pope's first over.

The Sixers fought back well through the middle overs, with Steve O'Keefe (1/16), Sean Abbott (1/23) and Tom Curran (2/39) dramatically slowing the home side's scoring.

When Dwayne Bravo was run out by Abbott for a diamond duck, the Stars were 5/116 with only 19 balls remaining in the innings.

However, some explosive hitting from Stars captain Glenn Maxwell (82 off 43) saw his side finish with an imposing total of 6/168 from their 20 overs.

The Sixers, needing only 107 runs to maintain a better Net Run Rate than the Renegades and secure 2nd place on the BBL ladder, lost wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.

Unfortunately for the men in magenta, their hopes of securing a home semi-final were dashed as they were bowled out for 74.

The Sixers finished 3rd on the BBL ladder and will now play the Renegades at Marvel Stadium on Friday night for a spot in the BBL Final.
