Captain hails consistency as Sixers go ‘vertical’

It’s the form that spawned a hashtag. The Sixers’ surge up the WBBL ladder continues apace, recording their fifth straight win against the Adelaide Strikers on Sunday. They now sit just two points shy of the playoff places with three games to play.

MATCH REPORT: Sixers make it a perfect weekend

Captain Ellyse Perry (67* from 46 balls) again led from the front with a commanding knock. However, it was disciplined bowling that laid the foundation. Marizanne Kapp and Sarah Aley nabbed two wickets each whilst starving the Strikers of scoring opportunities.

Perry was quick to heap praise on the team effort to bounce back so remarkably after losing their first six encounters.

“I've been really impressed with the way everyone's applied themselves at training and really turned up knowing what they want to work on and what they might not have been executing to their best in matches.

“I think that's what's turned it around – that skill execution and the consistency in the last five games compared to the start of the season has been outstanding. I think across the board we've all made slight improvements and that's probably all we needed to do in terms of winning matches.

"It's especially pleasing that everyone in the group has contributed at some stage across those matches too.”

While the players are certainly enjoying #sixersaregoingvertical on social media, Perry says the objective was one borne out of necessity.

“At the halfway mark we really only had one way to go on the ladder and that was vertical. That's the plan at the moment. We want to keep going vertical.

“I think it's playing in our favour. There's no ambiguity about what we need to do. We need to keep winning every game.

“From that point of view it's pretty clear. I think if we keep playing the style of cricket we've been playing and as consistently as we have been it's definitely a possibility. And, mathematically, we're still in there.”
