Lyon and Starc lead the way in Ashes victory

27 November 2017

Sixers bowlers Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc played a vital role as Australia took a 1-0 lead in the Ashes.

The highly-anticipated Ashes series has begun strongly for Australia with victory in the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. Sixers paceman Starc took the most wickets for the Aussies and finished with match figures of 6/128 off 44 overs.

Spin king Lyon was close behind with five wickets in total. He also clinched the crucial run out of James Vince.

Former Sixer and Australian captain Steve Smith kept the team alive with an outstanding first innings knock of 141 not out. Smith also displayed his reliability in the field with four catches in the match. Another former Sixer Josh Hazlewood also claimed four wickets in Australia’s victory including taking the key wicket of England skipper Joe Root in the second innings.

Meanwhile, the Sixers men have been playing long-form cricket in Sheffield Shield matches all over the country during the past week.

Sixers fast bowler Jackson Bird was the Man of the Match in Tasmania’s win over South Australia. In the match, Bird took a total of 8/81 off 33 overs with an impressive economy of 2.45. Half of his wickets saw four players get out for no runs.

New South Wales is on a 380-run chase on the final day of their Shield match against Victoria. With a huge total of 562 posted by Victoria, Sixers spinner Stephen O’Keefe took the most wickets in the NSW bowling attack in the first innings with three. Sean Abbott also took two wickets and Sixers captain Moises Henriques claimed the wicket of Aaron Finch.

With the bat, O’Keefe backed up his bowling stint with a top score in the NSW line-up. His 50 not out included seven boundaries. Sixers opener Daniel Hughes scored 44 runs (64) in the first innings.

At lunch on the final day, Nic Maddinson and Sean Abbott currently remain not out with eight wickets in hand. You can follow the match live here.
