Sixers Smash a hit at UOW

11 October 2017

The Gong Strikers were crowned champions of the first Sixers Smash event held at the University of Wollongong on Sunday.

Eight teams took part in the eight-a-side T20 tournament. A mix of local and international students, Club and grade cricketers as well as members of the local community competed.
The Gong Strikers defeated the Lankan Lions in the final, largely thanks to international student Alan Jangid who scored a blistering 69* to help his side post a mammoth 105 in their 7 overs. Despite a hat trick by Lankan Lions bowler Ashan Wanigaratne, Jangid was in firm control, hitting eight boundaries and four sixes.

The Lankan Lions put a fighting effort to score a respectful 75 in the run chase.
The Gong Strikers will now progress to the next stage of the Sixers Smash, taking on the other upcoming Sixers Smash champions across NSW.
Four international students from the day were selected to take part in an internship/work experience with Cricket NSW/Sydney Sixers.

The Sixers Smash is supported by StudyNSW:

StudyNSW is a NSW Government initiative focused on making the experiences of international students better, safer and more enjoyable in NSW.
