Sixers celebrate Community Round as Hazlewood returns for BBL | 15

The Sydney Sixers are thrilled to celebrate the lifeblood of cricket with Community Round at their home fixture against the Hobart Hurricanes, while also welcoming back Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood as a supplementary contracted player for KFC BBL|15.

Community Round will shine a spotlight on local clubs, grassroots players, coaches and volunteers who form the foundation of the game, with a range of special activations planned at the SCG to recognise their contribution.

Introduced ahead of BBL|13, the supplementary player list allows clubs to sign Cricket Australia–contracted players who are not expected to be available for selection, enabling teams to maintain strong connections with senior Australian players.

Hazlewood’s return continues a proud Sixers tradition, with the fast bowler one of the club’s foundation members. He played a key role in the Sixers’ early success, including as a member of the Sixers team who took out the BBL|01 title.

Sydney Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes said Community Round is an important opportunity to acknowledge the everyday heroes of cricket.

“Community Round is an opportunity for us as a club to uplift and celebrate the tremendous efforts of local clubs, coaches, grassroots players and volunteers,” Haynes said.

“The hard work done at community level is the foundation from which the elite game grows. Our match against the Hurricanes will celebrate every cricketer, from grassroots to the elite, and we encourage fans to come along and be part of what will be a fantastic day at the SCG.”

Adding to the celebrations, Sixers foundation member Josh Hazlewood has re-signed with the club as a supplementary contracted player for the BBL|15 season and will play a key role in Community Round activities.

Hazlewood will take part in Community Round celebrations, including an exclusive live player Q&A for invited local community clubs attending, alongside WBBL player Caoimhe Bray, as well as participating in the Community March into the SCG.

While the Australian quick is unlikely to take the field due to his ongoing recovery from injury, he will remain involved with the club in an off-field capacity throughout the season.

Haynes said Hazlewood’s ongoing involvement is a significant boost for the club.

“Josh has been a part of the Sixers since day one, and he’s someone our players, coaches and fans have always held in the highest regard,” Haynes said.

“Even when international commitments prevent him from taking the field, having someone of Josh’s calibre involved in any capacity is incredibly valuable. He understands our club, our culture and our values.”
