Sydney Sixers mark National Reconciliation Week

The Sydney Sixers are proud to recognise National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), embracing this year’s theme, “All In,” as a call for everyone to play their part in reconciliation.

As a part of the club’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation, the Sydney Sixers facilitate a number of programs and initiatives to improve pathways for Indigenous cricketers.

The annual First Nations T20 Cup every year provides an opportunity for Indigenous cricketers to don the Magenta and represent our club against cross-town rivals – the Sydney Thunder.

The Sydney Sixers also commissioned award-winning Wiradjuri artist Lua Pellegrini to share the story of our club through art, which featured on the First Nations Rounds jerseys across BBL and WBBL last season.

Sydney Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes said:

“As a club, we embrace reconciliation as a collective responsibility and, in the spirit of “All In”, are committed to progressing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“Aligned with Cricket NSW, we share a clear vision of cricket as a unifying force-bringing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians together, and creating opportunities for all to connect through the game.

“We are proud to play, and host matches on the lands of the Cammeraygal, Gadigal and Gumbaynggirr peoples, and we pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

“We recognise and celebrate the significant contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our game and to our nation, and we remain committed to our ongoing journey of reconciliation.”

First Nations Kit Artist Explanation: Lua Pellegrini

This artwork reflects the deep importance of the ocean across the lands of the Sixers’ three home grounds -the SCG on Gadigal Country, North Sydney Oval on Cammeraygal Country, and Coffs International Stadium on Gumbaynggirr Country.

The ‘U’ shapes symbolise people gathering near the water, a significant aspect of Country for these communities and a site of connection.

The ocean and surrounding waterways, including estuaries, have long been vital food sources for these communities.

At the heart of the design, three circles represent the Sixers’ home grounds, each surrounded by the Sixers community who support and uplift our players.

Acknowledgement of Country
Cricket NSW and the Sydney Sixers acknowledge and pay respect to the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands where we live, work and play. We honour Elders past, present and emerging and recognise their ongoing connection to Country, waters and culture.
