The Sydney Sixers have signed local product and New South Wales Blues rookie Riley Kingsell on a one-year deal with the club for KFC BBL|16.
After serving as a Local Replacement Player with the Sixers last summer, Kingsell has been rewarded with his first Big Bash contract as he continues his rise through the NSW pathway.
The 20-year-old right-hander currently holds a rookie contract with the NSW Blues and is regarded as one of the state's most exciting young prospects.
A product of Sydney's Camden Cricket Club, Kingsell has progressed through representative cricket to earn selection for Australia's Under-19 side, representing his country in both Youth One-Day Internationals and Youth Tests squad in the 2024 Tour of India.
Kingsell's right-handed batting provides additional depth to the Sixers' batting line-up.
Kingsell also comes from a strong sporting pedigree, with his mother, Sarah Ryan OAM, a former Australian Olympic swimmer and dual Olympic medallist, having represented Australia across three Olympic Games.
Sydney Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes said Kingsell had earned his opportunity after a strong period of development.
"Riley is a terrific example of the strength of the cricket pathway in New South Wales, and we're delighted to welcome him into our BBL squad," Haynes said.
"He made a strong impression on our coaches and players during his time with the group last season, and we've been really pleased with the way he has continued to develop throughout the pre-season.
"We're looking forward to seeing him take the next step in his career in Magenta."
Kingsell said signing his first Big Bash contract was a special moment.
"Pretty surreal, to be honest. Wasn't really expecting it when I got that message from Rach (Rachael Haynes)- super pumped," Kingsell said.
"A lot of screaming from Mum, but Dad was a lot more stoic. I think they're very eager to get out to the SCG this summer."
As a Local Replacement Player, Kingsell was grateful for the opportunity to spend time with the Sydney Sixers group during KFC BBL|15.
"I think I just picked up a lot of the professional habits of a lot of the players in the Sixers group and the wider community as well to learn from," Kingsell said.
"Watching Steve Smith and Babar (Azam) go about their work was something I am so lucky to have experienced at 20 years old.
"I think number one (goal) is just getting on the park and giving it my best. Obviously, you can't really control the outcome of what happens in the game, but I think being out there is a massive win and hopefully I can provide some pretty cool performances."
If selected by incumbent BBL Head Coach Matthew Mott, Kingsell will play in his Big Bash debut for the Sydney Sixers.
